Chinese TV Station Head Arrested for Suspected Corruption

Liu Wen, the director-general of documentary channel CCTV-9, has been detained on suspicion of economic malpractice Chinese media reports say.

The director-general of CCTV-9, the documentary channel from state backed television giant CCTV, has been taken away by authorities on suspected corruption reports China Daily.

Liu Wen was under investigation for economic malpractice in relation to the outsourcing of documentaries shown on CCTV-9 as well as advertising on the channel following a public audit, reported China Daily, citing an article on Chinese business website Caixin.

CCTV-9, established in 2011, has proved popular with Chinese youth, and the channel is particularly famous for the food documentary sensation A Bite of China, which PBS was reportedly interested in.

Liu is the latest CCTV executive to fall foul of the Chinese government's crackdown on corruption among state officials, bureaucrats and the business elite. In June, Rui Chenggang, a high-profile economic news anchor on CCTV, and Guo Zhenxi, the director-general of CCTV financial and economics channel, were arrested for corruption and bribery.
